The ASEAN region generates millions of tonnes of packaging waste annually. While sustainability commitments are growing, waste collection and recycling rates remain limited. A shift to a circular economy is essential, with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recognised as a key policy tool to drive investment in waste management systems, reduce environmental impact, and support a more sustainable economic model. However, EPR frameworks across ASEAN remain underdeveloped and fragmented, creating uncertainty for businesses and limiting regional circularity.

To address these challenges, the EU-ASEAN Business Council will launch its latest policy paper, “From Waste to Wealth: Advancing ASEAN’s Circular Economy Through EPR Alignment” on 28th May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The paper outlines key design principles to support more effective, accountable, and interoperable EPR systems across Southeast Asia.
