EU-ABC holds Healthcare Seminar – A Paradigm Shift in Public Health: Changing Behaviours

On the 12th of June 2018, the EU-ASEAN Business Council hosted a talk titled A Paradigm Shift in Public Health: Changing Behaviours. The semainar was held at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and was attended by various stakeholders from the healthcare field, including officials from the Ministry of Health, doctors, consultants, insurers, pharmaceutical representatives, researchers and students.

The session was moderated by Mr. Donald Low, Advisor to Executive Education of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. The first part of the talk delivered by Dr. Melvin Heng, Assistant Vice President of Gleneagles Hospital Singapore was centered around the healthcare landscape in Singapore. He introduced the topic of non-communicable diseases, making a link between such conditions with changes in lifestyles and an ageing population.

Prof. Jim Leitzel Director of Public Policy Studies of the University of Chicago spoke about regulatory policies. In particular, Prof. Leitzel touched on regulatory policies revolving around vices such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs and prostitution. He made a distinction between legal and illegal vices and shared about some of the existing regulatory policies surrounding them.
